Day 1 - 7th May 2025 - Touch-down in Venezia:
/“I’ve been awake and travelling for 30 hours”
I’ve just stepped off the vaporetto, suitcase surviving the jangling through Venice streets and it already feels as if the 19th Venice Architecture Biennale has taken over the city’s circulatory system. The Grand Canal is alive with a mix of Australian accents and laughter as we meet to support the Australian team. The HOME pavilion for the Venice Biennale 2025 presents an immersive, culturally rich experience grounded in Indigenous knowledge systems and architectural innovation.
Led by Dr Michael Mossman, Emily McDaniel, and Jack Gillmer (Lilley)
Before diving into the exhibition halls I want to thank the UNSW Cities Institute for inviting me along and the supportive team that have made this possible.
First impressions
A city already in rehearsal - Banners flutter from scaffolds and bridges informing the populace that the Biennale is underway
Conversations over spritz - Running into old friends and hearing recommendations of places to see and things to do while here in Venice. I also finally got to meet Alvin Zhu
Water Water Water - It really does guide Venetian life in every way.
Also regarding water taps, C = Hot, F = Cold
Goals for tomorrow
Make Italian coffee - The jetlag is real at the moment.
Cities Institute meet-up - Our UNSW delegation reconnects at the Arsenale to map out joint research threads
